Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) is an architectural plant that creates a fantastic focal point in your garden. This wonderfully statuesque, Oriental Black Bamboo has arching green canes that turn a lustrous black in their second or third year, while it's abundant glossy leaves remain evergreen. Unlike other varieties of bamboo, it is not invasive and can be grown on the patio in a large container. It makes an excellent foliage subject in a mixed border or, if grown in a row, makes an attractive and effective evergreen screen. Though its origins are in China, it is fully hardy and the British winter will not harm it, making a very welcome and unexpected winter treat.
